The safety innovations that we have made are garnering praise from several dental industry thought leaders across the nation, one of which is DeWitt Wilkerson, DMD. Dr Wilkerson is a nationally-known lecturer and one of my chief mentors at the Dawson Academy for Advanced Dental Studies in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Early on during the pandemic of 2020, Dr Bain authored the Covid-19 Safe Dentistry Field Guide which describes the game-changer equipment & ideas that we have put into practice.

Chief among the game-changer equipment innovations are our vacuum scavengers with intake-tubing that can be placed 6-8 inches from the mouth at the origin of oral aerosol emissions. These aerosols could possibly contain mercury-vapor, bacteria, and viruses including Covid-19. We grab those aerosols before they start floating around the room and put them through HEPA filters rated for viruses at 0.3 microns.

Covid-19 Preparations for Dentistry TV Interview with Dr Bain

Only the patient and 1 parent/guardian if necessary can enter the office. Do not bring large items. Your cell phone and keys will be placed in a clear plastic bag to protect against transmission
Handwashing upon entering will be accomplished before going to a treatment room.
Our reception area has a different look now. Most will go to the hand wash station first and then the treatment room instead of sitting down here.
We will use a dental dam when possible.
The vacuum scavengers that we have give truly unprecedented safety in that the oral aerosols produced by dental procedures are removed immediately into HEPA filters to mitigate the possibility of airborne disease transmission. Without these game-changer scavengers, oral aerosols can hang in the air for hours.
